Blood Orange Mimosa

Wandering the grocery aisles (a dangerous pastime, I know), I stumbled across some blood oranges. An incredible flavor revelation, I’m always shocked each year when these fruits are in prime season when everything else is out of season. So of course I couldn’t resist… I almost remade a blood orange and rosemary cake that is delicious, but upon review of the fact that there was still half of a Cranberry Pear Pie in the fridge, I decided to add a drink to the repertoire with a blood orange mimosa.

Blood oranges not only have a beautiful color, but also a unique taste that is a bit sweeter than your average orange. Paired with some orange liqueur (such as triple sec) and the champagne of your choice, it is a stunning and spectacularly tasty beverage.

This is the prefect recipe for, say, a Valentine’s Day brunch.

I prefer white wines that are dry with more bite, so if you’re  an avid Riesling fan skip my suggestion of a Brut Champagne, substituting with a Sec Champagne or even try a Prosecco. If you’ve never opened a bottle of champagne, I would HIGHLY suggest watching this video over at Chow.com, to keep your loved ones safe from flying corks and to get all the bubbles into your glass instead of pouring them out onto the floor.

My final suggestion is pour slowly…. As you can see I made quite a sticky mess during my photo shoot. 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 blood orange
  • 1/4 teaspoon orange liqueur
  • Brut Champagne to finish filling the glass

Instructions

  1. First, juice your blood orange, and if you'd like to avoid any pulp or possibly seeds in your drink, also strain the juice.
  2. Pour the orange juice, and the orange liqueur into the bottom of your champagne flute or wine glass, and then slowly pour the champagne to fill the glass to your desired level.
  3. Your drink may look like a beautiful sunset, which you may enjoy, but if you want yours mixed, I'd suggest using a cake tester or something of that nature to stir the drink together.
